Typical Application Areas for Crane Test Weights
Our crane test weights are used in a wide range of industries. Common applications include:
-
Regular crane and hoist inspections in accordance with DGUV regulations (UVV): For example, recurring inspections (110%) of overhead and gantry cranes. Operators must verify the load-bearing capacity of their cranes at defined intervals. With our weights, these crane tests can be carried out efficiently, allowing your crane to be quickly put back into operation.
-
Overload tests (+25%) for new installations (crane commissioning): Before a crane system is put into service for the first time, standards and torsion specifications require an overload test with 125% of the nominal load. Our test weights make these load tests possible – whether for bridge or gantry cranes. You’ll meet all requirements for official commissioning inspections by a certified expert.
-
Load trials in mechanical and plant engineering: In development and production environments, test weights are used to apply defined loads to machine components or structures. Whether for quality assurance, validating static calculations, or fine-tuning vibration dampers – modular weights support all types of load testing. Specific requirements such as bending and torsional stress tests can thus be simulated under realistic conditions.
-
Quality assurance and expert acceptance inspections: Official load approvals and safety tests (e.g., after repairs or modifications) require reliable test loads. Our weights serve as dependable tools for inspectors and certified experts, enabling verification of braking behavior and crane stability under full load. With Tenwinkel test weights, you’ll pass every inspection safely and efficiently, ensuring full compliance with all relevant standards.
Price Comparison: Concrete vs. Steel Test Weights
Another key factor: costs. At Tenwinkel, we rely on high-quality concrete test weights, which offer clear cost advantages over pure steel. The following example illustrates the difference – concrete is approximately 50% more affordable than steel:
By purchasing concrete test weights from Tenwinkel, you benefit from lower acquisition costs and a durable product. Thanks to their robust construction and weather resistance, our weights are suitable for a wide range of environments – whether in workshops, on construction sites, or offshore installations. On request, we also organize shipping and transport, ensuring that your order arrives quickly and safely.
Beton / Concrete | Stahl / Steel | |
---|---|---|
approx. price per kg | approx. 1 EUR - 2 EUR | approx. 2 EUR - 5 EUR |
Cost for 1,000 kg | approx. 2,000 EUR | approx. 5,000 EUR |
Cost for 20,000 kg | approx. 20,000 EUR | approx. 40,000 EUR |
Note: These are indicative reference values. Actual prices may vary depending on design. Heavy concrete is not only cheaper, but also rust-free and doesn’t require expensive alloys. In addition, concrete weights are less attractive to thieves (no high scrap value like steel). You receive a cost-efficient and secure solution for your load testing needs.

What Are Crane Test Weights Used For?
Test weights for crane systems are essential for performing legally required load and overload tests. Technical managers and plant supervisors in crane and systems engineering understand how critical such test loads are to ensure operational safety – they are the only way to verify the safe operation of your crane system. With the appropriate test weights, real-world load trials can be conducted, such as in tension and compression, to verify the load-bearing capacity and stability of cranes and lifting equipment. This enables companies to fulfill safety-related inspections (e.g., annual UVV tests) reliably and ensures full compliance with occupational safety regulations.
Tenwinkel provides robust, modular crane test weights – from 5 kg to 165 t – reliably from a single source and available for purchase. That means: a wide selection of test weights is available to suit your specific needs, whether for small workshop cranes or large heavy-duty lifting equipment. All weights meet safety standards (in line with current accident prevention regulations) and are optionally available with +10% overload capacity. This ensures compliance even with the most demanding testing requirements, offering the necessary buffer for overload tests in accordance with industry standards. Operators can therefore carry out recurring inspections of their cranes and lifting gear professionally and fully meet all crane inspection requirements. All of our test weights and test systems are protected by registered utility models.
In short: With Tenwinkel test weights, you are investing in safety, efficiency, and reliability. Instead of renting expensive weights every year, you have your own equipment on-site – always ready to use, with no waiting time or logistical complexity. Our solutions are technically sound, field-tested, and tailored to your needs.
According to DGUV Principle 309-001, all crane operators are required to perform regular inspections of their crane systems. For this purpose, we offer our utility model-protected system.
These systems consist of various plates, each equipped with four integrated threaded inserts for safe lifting.
Two short and two long locking pins secure the test plates during lifting operations. A lifting beam with two certified safety lifting points distributes the lifting forces via a 2- or 4-leg chain sling to the crane hook.
The plates are connected to the beam and to each other using two square tubes and the locking pins.
The test plates are easily stacked using a forklift or crane. Integrated centering cones ensure precise alignment between the plates. All metal parts are primed and coated in signal red (RAL 3020), while all concrete plates are finished in light grey (RAL 7035). The weights are cast with integrated weighing and comply with a tolerance of -0 / +2.5%.
Please note: these weights are not suitable for legal-for-trade calibration.

Purchasing Crane Test Weights – Your Investment in Safety and Efficiency
If you regularly need test weights, purchasing them instead of renting is a smart decision. Having your own crane test weights offers many advantages:
-
Long-term availability:
Your test weights are always on hand – ideal for recurring inspections and unplanned safety checks. No more waiting for available rental weights or relying on external providers. This saves time and hassle during equipment maintenance (time savings through eliminated logistics).
-
Investment security & utilization:
Once purchased, the weights can be used for a wide range of load tests – whether for annual UVV inspections, acceptance tests of new crane installations, or load tests after repairs. You're investing in the safety of your operation and ensuring optimal utilization of your equipment. When needed, the weights can also be passed on within the company or used across multiple projects. Thanks to our modular system, the test weights work like building blocks – they can be flexibly expanded and adapted at any time.
-
Tailored to your needs:
Our modular systems can be customized to your requirements. Individual weight units are combined to form the desired total load. We also offer compatible accessories such as transport trolleys or trailers for easy transport and interim storage. This allows you to configure a test weight set that fits your crane system and your inspection needs precisely. The various modules also make it possible to simulate different load conditions, e.g. to realistically test vibrations or braking behavior under load.

Modular Beam System – Flexible Test Loads up to 165 t
A main beam with four sub-beams forms the core of our modular system – enabling you to assemble test loads ranging from 11 t to 165 t from standard modules measuring 1.5 × 2.0 m. The total footprint of a fully loaded system is only around 4.5 × 7.3 m, allowing even heavy-load testing to be carried out safely and space-efficiently. Locking pins secure the test plates in place, conical centering guides allow quick alignment, and the load-distributing safety lifting points reliably direct all forces to the crane hook.
Tolerances & Quality Assurance
All concrete plates are cast with integrated scales and meet a narrow tolerance of −0 / +2.5% – ideal when you require precise test loads for UVV checks, acceptance tests, or 110% overload inspections. While these weights are not certifiable for legal-for-trade use, factory weighing ensures repeatable load values and thus compliant test results.
